He was a member of the Wellington High School championship state basketball  team with close friends Jerry Waugh and Ernie Barrett. He was drafted into the Third Army in May, 1945 and underwent basic training in Fort Polk, Alexandria Louisianna. He proudly served his country in the Third Army Headquarters under General George Patton. Richard served as part of the Security, Clearance and Intelligence Gathering department.  This position was the result of his excellent scores on the required aptitude tests. He was honorably discharged from the army in 1947 and began his studies at the University of Kansas in the School of Engineering and achieved a Bachelor of Science degree in Business in 1951. He was a proud member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

Richard began dating Betty Spotts, his high school sweetheart, whom he married on August 20th, 1950 in the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland. They were happily married for 65 years. In this loving and nurturing home, they welcomed 4 children. Debra Kay (Don Harden), Janet Sue (Joe Fast), Richard Charles II (Susan), James Alan (Reeta).

Richard and Betty had another home: the First Presbyterian Church where they lived their faith with their cherished church family. Richard served as an elder, educator and frequent co-celebrant.

Richard joined his father-in-law, Don Spotts, at the Don Spotts Lumber Company in 1951. He was instrumental in the success of the business and service to the community. He worked for 59 years, retiring in 2010. Richard was honored to receive the first  Ashland Chamber of Commerce Legacy award.   His service to the community included serving on the city council and as mayor of Ashland for many years.
