Mildred Dorothy (Steinbeck) Stamm of Laverne, Oklahoma passed away Thursday, June 4th, 2020 at the age of 95 at the Harper County Hospital in Buffalo, Oklahoma. She was born September 17, 1924 to Richard and Mary (Barnard) Steinbeck in Benkleman, Nebraska. Mildred was welcomed to the family by her parents and brother Marvin, who later had siblings, Everett, Darlene, Dale, Pete, Leo, and Bernita.

Mildred was raised during the Great Depression. She had to quit school early to help her mom care for her brothers and sisters. Mildred and her brothers and sisters had to ride a horse to go to school in a one room school house.

Mildred met Roy Stamm and fell in love immediately. They were married April 23, 1947 and were blessed with 2 sons and a daughter. Bud and Mildred were happily married for 64 years.

Early married life was on the farm in Nebraska then Bud went to work for Miss – Wis and they moved to Laverne, which he worked until he retired.

Mildred enjoyed many years as a mother and housewife, until Leo was older and then she went to work for Fruit of the Loom t-shirt factory in Woodward, Oklahoma. After 10 years of employment, the factory shut down and she enjoyed being a gate keeper at the Fort Supply Lake. When Bud retired, he insisted that she retire at 62, so they could embark on many camping and fishing trips. Mildred was an avid fisherman and won the 1987 Walley Rodeo in Canton, Oklahoma. Often referred to by her grandchildren as a “Professional Fisherman”.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sister, her oldest son, Carl and his wife Cathy and daughter, Lisa,

She is survived by Carl’s children, Brian Griffin, and son Matthew, Kristy and husband George Apple and their children, Blake and Hunter.

Daughter, Pam Freeman and husband, Steve of Alva, Oklahoma and their children; Jenny Freeman of Wichita Kansas, Amy Freeman and daughter, Chloe Trayler of Hugoton, Kansas and daughter, Tucker Freeman of Alva, Oklahoma, Lacey Holder and husband Adam with brand new twin babies, son “Thomas Todd” and daughter, “Addison Rae” of Edmond, Oklahoma, Stefany Nichols and  husband Eric, daughter Tatum and son,  Lane of Seiling, Oklahoma, and Dillion Freeman of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Mildred was so proud of the birth of the twin great grandchildren and was hoping to be able to see them but her failing health did not allow that to take place.

Her son, Leo and wife Rhonda and their children Glenn and wife Janet and their children Kodi Jo, son John, Gretchen, and Kenna; Ray and wife Mariah and their son Raymond.

A special thank you goes out to the Harper County Community ER for all their special care and the Laverne EMT’s for their swift response and care in getting Mildred to Buffalo; to Western Skilled Nursing for their gentle care of Mildred for the past few months and to the Buffalo Hospital for all of their care and special consideration to Mildred and all her family.
