Merl was raised in the Logan, Oklahoma area and attended the Midway Country Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, ranching, camping, fishing, coyote and coon hunting and bird dog trials. He earned the FFA State Farmer Degree in 1961 and was awarded the Beaver County Family Farm of the Year in 1983. He attended Sunset School, Darrouzett School and graduated from Beaver Schools. He attended OSU graduating in 1965 with a major in Animal Science and a minor in Meat Science.
Merl farmed and ranched, worked at the Beaver Sale Barn, Born Farms and hauled fertilizer and wheat. He was also Supervisor of Silo Feeders for Preferred Beef Group of Booker, Texas for nearly 15 years.
Merl is survived by his son Mervin Custer and wife Ronda of Woodward, Oklahoma, daughter Shari Moore and husband Howard of Helena, Oklahoma, sister Bonita File of Perryton, Texas, granddaughters Jacey Halliburton and husband J.R. of Slapout, Oklahoma and Lindsey Custer of Sharon, Oklahoma, grandson Leo Moore and fiancé Chloe Elwynn and her son Denni, of Enid, Oklahoma, great grandson Kase Roy Halliburton of Slapout, Oklahoma, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lamona Ward and husband Rayburn Ward and brother in law Tom File.
