Mary Hamilton Obituary

Mary B. Landers was born on August 16, 1935, to Robert and Angie Landers at her grandparents’ home near Lone Wolf, Oklahoma. Robert had two daughters from a previous marriage – Edna Scales and Marie Jones. Robert and Angie would go on to have Charles Lewis, Toni, and then Mary. Her beloved twin brothers, Michael and Issac (also known as Mike and Ike), were later born in 1944.

Mary moved around quite a bit during her school days. She started school in Retrop, moved to Grand Prairie, Texas, for a couple of years, completed most of junior high school back in Retrop, and went to high school in Sentinel, Oklahoma. She would later go on to complete her GED in Laverne, Oklahoma.

On November 11, 1952, she (17) and Lawrence Bud Hamilton (19) traveled from Oklahoma to be legally married in Clayton, New Mexico. Bud worked in the oil field, so their first seven years of marriage were spent moving around the Midwest, including Wyoming, Texas, and several other states. Between 1960 and 1980, she resided in Laverne, Oklahoma. For the following nine years, she lived in Amarillo, Texas, before moving back to Laverne to settle down.

Bud and Mary had three children: Charles Dwayne (1953), Larry Jay (1955), and Jamie Ann (1959). Mary loved pretending Dwayne and Larry were twins and enjoyed dressing them alike during their early years.

Despite all the secretarial jobs Mary held, working at the daycare in Amarillo was by far her favorite. She had a special gift for caring for children. If Mary wasn’t tending to children’s needs, you could likely find her in an intense card game, playing board games or tending to her yard, as she had a love for working outside. She also enjoyed watching game shows, and sitting on her front porch with an iced tea usually chatting with one of her many friends. Mary’s smile was bright and contagious, and she will be missed by many.

Mary passed peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, April 6, 2025.

Mary is survived by many loved ones, including Dwayne and Chassity Hamilton of Laverne, Larry Hamilton of Laverne, and Jamie and Ron Swallow of Laverne. She has ten grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren and many friends whom she would consider family.

Mary was preceded in death by her late husband Lawrence Burns Hamilton, her father Robert Landers, her mother Angie Carroll, her sister Toni Hulin, her brothers Mike and Ike Carroll, her half-sister Marie, and her former daughter-in-law Candice Hamilton.

For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign LORD will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations. Isaiah 61:11
