Kathryn Waugh Obituary

Viewing will be held at the Laverne Funeral Home only. Sunday 1:00 - 5:00 PM.

Kathryn Lucille Waugh, the daughter of Ernest and Lucille (Burton) Waldrop, was born on June 27, 1945 in Hayward, California. Kathie left her earthly home and entered into the kingdom of heaven on Thursday, January 20, 2022 surrounded by her family. She was at home, awaiting her heavenly reunion, not only with her Saviour, but also her husband Leroy and young son Timmy.

Growing up in Guymon, OK, Kathie received her education in the Guymon schools and graduated from Guymon High School in 1963. She didn’t want to venture far from home, so she enrolled in Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Oklahoma. It was here she met the young man she was destined to marry–Leroy Waugh from Buffalo, Oklahoma. She was in the same First Aid class as Leroy and actually sat beside him because the students were seated in alphabetical order. He was so smitten by her, he always said HE needed First Aid after that. They were united in marriage on May 28, 1965 in Guymon. The newlyweds moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma so Leroy could complete his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture Education from Oklahoma State University and Kathie could complete her degree in Elementary Education. They both fell in love with OSU. Their years in Stillwater produced many memories and lifelong friendships. Leroy graduated in 1966 and Kathie continued her studies in elementary education at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha while Leroy began his first teaching job as an Ag teacher in nearby Cyril. Kathie completed her degree in May of 1967. Their first child Timmy Ray was born on September 26, 1967. Tragedy came to the young couple when Timmy was diagnosed with cancer and passed away at the age of 21 months. Kathie and Leroy’s strong Christian faith sustained them as they continued their teaching careers in Cyril until 1970.  It was then they moved back closer to home, with Leroy teaching Vocational Agriculture in Laverne, OK.  Their family grew as Tiffany Kay was born in January of 1971 and Tisha Lea in January of 1973.  Their family was complete. Leroy and Kathie both became members of the First Baptist Church in Laverne; Leroy serving as a Deacon from 1972 until his passing and Kathie and he both serving as Sunday School teachers for many years.

Kathie taught junior high and high school English for Buffalo Public Schools the next 3 years, until a second grade position opened in Laverne. She was quickly hired and continued that segment of her teaching career for 22 years. During that time, she was instrumental in establishing and teaching the Transitional 1st grade class for Laverne. Kathie also completed her Master’s Degree in Educational Counseling from NWOSU in Alva during those years. With Leroy being an Ag teacher and eventually the Harper County Extension Agent, she was his #1 helper in 4-H for 15 years.  In 2008 she decided to retire from teaching and work for Murphy-Brown (Smithfield) in Personal Relations. After 10 years at Smithfield, she retired and accepted the position of school counselor for Laverne Schools. Following the death of her beloved husband Leroy, Kathie retired for the last time in May 2021.

Kathie and Leroy spent their life of 56 years together doing the things they both loved. Traveling with Tisha and Tiffany was always a family delight for them all. With Kathie being an only child, her parents, Ernest and Lucille Waldrop of Guymon, Oklahoma would travel along when they were able. Many annual trips were made to Southfork, Colorado. Over the years, family trips with kids and grandkids were taken to Branson, Alaska, Disneyland, a Caribbean Cruise, and on Kathie and Leroy’s 40th Anniversary, a family trip to Hawaii was included. Their travels also included OSU football games, including several bowl games. One particular bowl game was the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. It was an oddity because it snowed that day and everyone was jokingly calling it the Snow Bowl.  Kathie and Leroy also made trips sponsoring the Harper County 4-H kids to Kansas City and Washington, D.C.

During her lifetime, Kathie was a woman of faith and she was a woman of humility. She was compassionate yet she was stern. She was encouraging but she was not an enabler. She was a cancer survivor and she is now eternally blessed.

Kathie has left a legacy of faith, love, and family in her passing.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years Leroy, son Timmy Ray Waugh, father and mother Ernest and Lucille Waldrop, brother-in-law Leland Waugh, father and mother-in-law George and Edith Waugh. Kathie leaves as her survivors, daughters Tiffany DeWitt of Laverne, OK, Tisha and husband John Reynolds of Ponca City, OK. grandchildren: Elise and husband Chris Mussellwhite and London Dewitt of Laverne, OK, Phoenix DeWitt of Oklahoma City, OK, Laney Reynolds and Sutton Reynolds of Ponca City, OK. great grandchild: Colt Price of Laverne, OK. brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Gorey Waugh of Buffalo, Glen Waugh of Buffalo, Bryce and wife Janie Waugh of Buffalo, Lavena and husband Red Chastine of Guymon, Clydene Waugh of Buffalo, Estella and husband Walter Beesley of Hugoton, KS, Dale and wife Shirley Waugh of Buffalo, Elva and husband Mickey Bentley of Laverne, Eva and husband Jay Lile of Amarillo, TX, Cora and husband W.M. Carlile of Hennessey, and Glenda and husband Mike Cochran of Edson, KS. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
