Jerry Hughes Obituary

Jerry Wayne “Yogi” Hughes passed peacefully on March 13, 2024 at the age of 86, in Edmond, Oklahoma. He was born April 28, 1937 in Beaver, Oklahoma to Vivian “Tooty” (Longhofer) Hughes and Wendell Hughes.

Jerry grew up in Booker, Texas attending the Booker school system. He married Bonnie E. Henness at the Methodist Church in Booker on Dec 26, 1954.

In 1955 he went to work for Phillips Petroleum.  Jerry worked for Phillips in multiple locations including Indianapolis IN, Arlington TX, Charlotte NC, and Bartlesville OK.  Jerry’s entrepreneurial spirit arrived in 1967 when Jerry and Bonnie moved to Follett TX and opened and operated Hughes Oil Inc. until 1982. From 1982 – 1990, Jerry and Bonnie owned and operated several sole proprietorships in the Texas, and Oklahoma Panhandles and also Colorado Springs, CO. In 1990 Jerry and Bonnie moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma.  They owned and operated several small businesses including Cowboy Sportplex, N 177 Mini Stop and Cowboy Go-Cart.

He retired in 1999 when Jerry enjoyed playing golf every day at Lakeside Memorial and Stillwater Country Club. He and Bonnie moved to Edmond, OK in 2019 until his passing. 

Christianity was always a part of his life, no matter what life events he was going through, he always had a quiet time and would go through the Bible from front to back many times throughout his lifetime.  Jerry also loved his daily devotionals and attended church regularly.

Jerry was always remembered for being very generous providing financially and through volunteering in the communities he lived in.

Jerry is preceded in death by his Sister Sonja Witt Burkhart.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Bonnie Hughes of the home, Brother, Bill Bryan Hughes and wife Judy of Suncity West AZ, 3 Sons; Barry Dean Hughes of San Antonio, TX; Grandson Ryan Hughes of OH, Grandson Nick Hughes of Edmond OK, Granddaughter Andrea Choate of Carefree AZ and Granddaughter Meagan Cruson of Ardmore, OK.; Son, Darron Rex Hughes of Edmond, OK; his wife Lindy, Grandson Hayden Hughes of Edmond, OK and Granddaughter Hayley Rhodes of Edmond, OK.; Son, Wendell Scott Hughes of Edmond, OK; his wife Janie, Granddaughter Natasha Zunker of New Braunfels, TX, Grandson Adam Milton of OKC, OK, Granddaughter Brittany Meadows Hendersonville, TN, and Grandson Brennen Hughes of San Marcos, TX, 17 Great Grandchildren, 9 Nieces and Nephews and special long-time family friends Reggie and Glenda Laubhan of Mesa, AZ.

The family would like to take this opportunity to express their sincere gratitude to Tessa Gregg, RN who runs the senior host home that Jerry resided in for the final few months of his journey. The personalized, compassionate, loving one on one care that she provided was a great comfort to our family.
