Janet Wiley Obituary

Janet “Jan” Elizabeth Wiley, known to many of us as “Mimi”, was born on October 12, 1935, and she was welcomed into the arms of the Lord on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. A loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Jan had almost as may hobbies as she had titles.

Jan was born and raised in Shattuck, Oklahoma. She met the love of her life, Eddie, at Oklahoma State University, and the two married on June 12, 1955, beginning a life filled with adventure, several moves, and creative outlets. In 1963 and after being stationed in Germany, the pair moved to Follett, Texas to raise their three children: Evan, Kathy, and Chris. She was active in United Methodist Women and remained an active member of the United Methodist Church in Follett where she sang in choir and played the organ and piano. Music was part of her soul, and although she could read sheet music, her natural ear allowed her to play beautifully when she chose to wander beyond the notes.

In addition to music, Jan loved and appreciated all kinds of beauty. For her, quilting was a beloved creative outlet. She attended seminars across the country to exchange tips and techniques with fellow quilters, and many of her loved ones still refer to specific “Mimi quilts” that she created for them. She also had a particular love for jewelry, often selflessly adorning her granddaughters in her treasures. And whomever visited her can attest to the fact she also had a flair for presentation. For instance, she always ensured every item on the supper table rested on its appropriately colored Fiestaware item, helping her earn the unofficial title of World’s Greatest Hostess. Notably, she mastered the art of “sugaring” the rim of her grandchildren’s Dr. Pepper drinks-an essential step, she believed, for properly eating gargoyle-style Chef Boyardee. She loved to travel and was always eager for a new adventure, a desire she fulfilled by visiting five continents. During one of her international trips, she and her husband met with their grandson in Prague where they drove a Maybach to test out European steak, confirming her theory that the beef is better back home.

Whether at home or abroad, she passed time by reading, playing cards, and learning about whomever was around her at the time-and she wanted to share what she learned with whomever would listen. She played a pivotal role in the creation of the Lipscomb County Pioneers of the Prairie history book, for which she was Co-editor. All in all, there was nothing Jan Wiley could not conquer once she put her mind to it.

Many people will remember Jan for her beautiful, pristine gardens-places of such quiet tranquility that stepping inside felt like wandering beyond and shedding the weight of everyday life. She loved showing it off to her grandchildren and to anyone who would walk through it with her. In every pursuit, Jan brought artistry and care.

To put it simply, Jan lived a life that was full and she will be dearly missed.

Jan is preceded in death by her parents William and Marguerite Schultz, brothers George and Jerry Schultz, sister Mary Kay Squire, and son Evan Wiley.

She leaves behind her husband of 70 years Eddie Wiley of Canadian, TX, son Chris (Rae) Wiley of Follett, TX, daughter Kathy Wiley of Shattuck, OK, eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and loving nieces and nephews.
