Frances Nadine (Jenkins) Treiber

Frances Nadine Treiber, 98, passed away on May 18, 2024 in Wichita, KS, surrounded by family. She was born on the family farm southwest of Shattuck, Okla. on January 24, 1926, and was the youngest of seven children born to Sam and Tennie Jenkins. Nadine was the only one of her siblings to complete high school, graduating from Shattuck High School in 1949. 

Nadine eloped with the love of her life, Vernon Treiber, Sr. on March 20, 1951. Theirs was a happy union, and Vernon and Nadine enjoyed 38 years of marriage before Vernon’s passing. Nadine and Vernon had two children, Sherry and Vernon Jr, whom they raised in Blackwell. Nadine returned to Shattuck after her husband’s passing in 1989, and she remained a beloved member of the Shattuck community until moving to Kansas in 2018 to be near family. While in Shattuck, Nadine was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, as well as the Shattuck Senior Citizens Center, where she served as treasurer.

Nadine’s hobbies included a love of reading, crossword puzzles, and cats. She had a talent for creating beautiful oil paintings, including many landscapes of her hometown area. Despite many losses in her lifetime, Nadine exemplified a quiet strength and determination to face life’s hardships with perseverance, grace, and oftentimes, a song. Her long life is a testament to God’s goodness and blessings, especially having overcome smallpox, tuberculosis, and breast cancer. Nadine is remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who, although never knowing the example of her own grandparents, was a naturally compassionate and endearing grandmother.

Nadine was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings, as well as her husband, Vernon, and daughter, Sherry. She is survived by her son, Vernon Jr., and his wife, Darla, of Rose Hill, KS; grandchildren Michelle (James) Thorne and Erin (Justin) Smith of Andover, KS, and Luke (Allison) Treiber of Ankeny, IA. At the time of her passing, Nadine had six great-granddaughters: Sadie, Lydia, Elliana, Hannah, and Ava Thorne; and Lily Treiber.
