Virgil Roy Meyer

Virgil Roy ‘Roho’ Meyer was born in Sabinal, Texas on July 5, 1938, to Jacob August and Clara Lee Meyer (DeWitt), he was one of nine children and a twin to Johnny Troy Meyer. Roy passed away in the early hours of August 6, 2018, at his home. In his last days on this earth, his wife Bonnie said he told her, he was hearing music and was in no pain.

Roy was well known for his adventurous life! At the young age of 16, joined a cattle drive from San Antonio, Texas to Dodge City, Kansas and wrote a story about his adventure. Upon completion of the 11^th grade, he joined the Navy, later finding out that he would have been awarded a football scholarship to attend Texas Tech. At the age of 18, Roy married his sweetheart Bonnie Lou, who was 16. The two were married May 31, 1957, in Clayton, New Mexico. Roy boarded and shipped out the very next day with the Navy. He served in Squadron VP 40, also on the USS Oriskany from 1956 through 1960, then an additional two years in the active Navy Reserves and two years inactive Reserve.

Roy had a passion for life! He believed in living each moment to the fullest and sharing that joy with family and friends. Roy and Bonnie shared 61 loving years, during which they raised their three daughters; Peggy, Katrina, and Royetta. They also welcomed Larry Litton and Laura Seale (Downs) into their home for some time. Roy really enjoyed coaching the girls in softball for several years. He was a very ornery fellow and loved playing pranks, telling jokes and riddles with anyone who would participate. Roy enjoyed all types of hunting, especially coon hunting with his buddies, as well as fishing with all his relatives. He loved reading the Bible, playing cards and also loved dressing up as Elvis for any occasion. Whether it was making an appearance at a dear friend’s wedding or family reunions, but especially when it came to visiting the senior citizens.   

Roy was a Jack-of-all-trades and had various jobs during his lifetime; Police Officer, Minister, Coach, Custodian, Bus Driver, Auctioneer, Field Engineer for ODOT, Electrician, Striper Fishing Guide, City Manager, and Concrete Finisher. Roy even had his famous Cheesy Catfish Bake published in Time Life. He was always wheelin’ and dealin’; it had been said of him, that he could sell a rusty penny. He was always looking for a bargain, but really it was about the opportunity to make new friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Troy, Billy Joe, and Ray and his sisters Ruth, Lorene, Nita, and Betty.

Roy is survived by his wife Bonnie and his only living brother Jake and wife Joyce. He is also survived by three daughters, Peggy Tillery and husband Ron, Katrina Hickman and husband David, Royetta Johnston and husband Ronnie, seven grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, one living Aunt Dorotha, and several nieces and nephews.
