Olive Margaret Powell Appleton was born March 11, 1923 in Jackson, MS to Ada Reeves Powell and Martin Powell. Olive grew up in a large extended family in Pike and Walthall, MS counties. After graduating from Mississippi College in 1943 she took a job teaching school in Baltimore, MD. She earned a Master's of Religious Education from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1947, and married Vincent Braly Appleton that year.
 
Olive and Vincent served congregations in Kentucky, Indiana, California, Germany, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Iowa, and the United Arab Emirates.  Olive earned a Master's of Education from Central State University while teaching in Okarche, OK.  Her final teaching position was in Fort Supply, OK before retiring in 1990.  During her retirement Olive served as the Senior Citizens columnist for the Harper County Journal and was active in the DAR, Retired Educators Association the First Baptist Church of Buffalo and the Democratic Party.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Vincent,  son, Bart, brother, Carl Clarence Powell, niece Jamie Powell, nephews Mark Powell and Marc Appleton.  She is survived by Martin Appleton (Paula) of Alva and daughter Margaret Appleton Barger (Chip) of Kansas City and her beloved grandchildren Jennifer, Kelsey and Matthew Appleton of Alva, Erin Barger of Kansas City, Andrew Barger (Natsuko) and two great grandsons: Felix and Emiliano Barger of Nakakokubun, Japan.
 
The family would like to thank friends in the community of Buffalo, OK, Dr. Elizabeth Kinzie and staff at The Share Convalescent Center of Alva and the residents and staff at The Homestead of Alva.
