Coeta June Plain was born at home on October 1, 1935 in rural Beaver County, Oklahoma to Hessel James Plain, Sr. and his wife Rosa Evelyn Hamrick Plain.  Coeta was second of nine children in a family that included Elizabeth Jane, Hessel James Jr., Arthur Joseph, Donald Jack, Georgia Jean, Rose Ellen, John Evan, and Mary Lyn.  Coeta’s family moved to the Follett, Texas area in 1944.  Coeta graduated as Salutatorian from Follett High School in 1953.

She married Virgil Clarence “Pete” Sperry in Clayton, New Mexico in July 1953.  On February 8, 1974, they welcomed the birth of a son, Virgil Neal Sperry.  They also raised Pete’s nephew, Robert Rodlee Williamson.  Pete and Coeta lived on the Gex Ranch for many years before building a new home NE of Follett, Texas, in 1987.  They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2003.  Pete died in September of 2003, and several years later, Coeta married Raymond Halliburton.

Coeta worked for ASCS, the Circle Register newspaper, the Follett National Bank, and was County and District Clerk for Lipscomb County.  She was a member of the Follett United Methodist Church.

Coeta was preceded in death by her husband Virgil Clarence Sperry, her parents, one sister, and all 4 of her brothers.  She is survived by her son, Virgil “Neal” Sperry and wife Dusty Ann Matthews Sperry of Follett, Texas; grandsons Cody James Sperry and Monty Chance Sperry of Logan, Oklahoma; nephew Rod Williamson and wife Marcella of Follett, Texas; husband Raymond Halliburton of Gage, OK; three sisters: Georgia Perez and husband Willie of Amarillo, Ellen Rabe of Perryton, and Mary Hoover and husband David of Albuquerque, New Mexico, sisters-in-law: Shirley Kleiwer Plain of Canyon, Texas, Shirley Kelln Plain of Oklahoma City, Shelli Bailey Plain of Austin, and Linda Fazio Plain of Massachusetts.

Coeta passed from this life at hospice in Amarillo, Texas, on August 3, 2018 after a long battle with cancer.
