Alfred Rudolph Wiederstein was born on November 19, 1923 in Hillsboro, KS to Leo and Martha Wiederstein. He passed from this life on Friday, May 18, 2018 surrounded by his family.
He was baptized December 30, 1923 and confirmed on May 15, 1938 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, KS.
Alfred joined the Army in December 1942 as part of the 528th Engineer Combat Battalion and made the trip to Europe aboard the Queen Mary. He fought in all 5 European campaigns, Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes, Northern France and Central Europe. His decorations include the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, WW II Victory Ribbon and EAME Theater Ribbon with One Silver Service Star. He was an avid supporter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a proud member of the Gage American Legion.
He met Linda Koch at the Marion County Fair in 1942, they were united in marriage on August 25, 1946 and three sons, Stephen, Rodney and Douglas made their family complete. They eventually made their home north of Higgins. Alfred enjoyed farming, fishing, carpentry and spending time with his family. He and Linda were active in Christ Lutheran Church and stayed busy with the Shattuck Senior Citizens Center, where Alfred became quite the pool shark.
He is preceded in death by his wife Linda and siblings Louise, Ruby, Allen, Ed, Alice and Hugo.
He is survived by his three sons and their wives: Stephen and wife Shirley of Higgins, TX, Rodney and wife Margaret of Shattuck, OK and Douglas and wife Jody of Higgins, TX. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Melissa Shuman and husband Greg of Buffalo, OK, Meghan Cox and husband AJ of Shattuck, Rhonda Thomas and husband Homer of Shattuck, Zach Wiederstein and wife Martha of Arkansas City, KS, Jacob Wiederstein and wife Jenni of Cordell, OK and Eric Wiederstein and Julie of Alva, OK and six great-grandchildren Max Shuman, Ali June & Amelia Cox, Reid & Eden Wiederstein and Houston Thomas.
